26.01.04 ISDN service in Clonbur by next April

Minister for Community, Rural & Gaeltachta Affairs, announced today that he has been informed by Eircom that it is hoped to provide ISDN service in Clonbur by next April.  At present Clonbur is served from Cong, a distance of 6 kilometres.Consequently, this means that there are a lot of people in the Clonbur area who cannot avail of ISDN services, said the Minister.

Eircom have now completed the site work for the new cabinet (this is the shell in which the new exchange will fit) and the ESB connection is completed.  The cabinet and equipment delivery is due in the next week and it is hoped to commission the cabinet, having connected it to Cong exchange in about 8 weeks.  The provision of this upgrade will provide ISDN basic grade access (i.e. two channels per physical line) and it will have a range of 6.5 to 7 kilometres depending on the quality of the copper line.

Minister Ó Cuív said that the provision of broadband in Rural areas is of vital importance and he hopes that this is the first step in a continuing process of improvement of broadband in the area.
