Career

 Prior to entering politics on a full time basis, he worked as a primary school teacher and Deputy Principal at St. Finian’s School, Finglas.

Electoral History and Political Record

First elected to Dublin Corporation in 1985 and again in 1991

Subsequently elected to Dail Eireann in the 1997 General Election for the constituency of Dublin North West.

Re-elected in May 2002 and again in May 2007.

Served as Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs up to November 2004

Served as Co-Chair of the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body from November 2004 until his appointment as Minister of State in June 2007 with responsibility for the Community Affairs and the National Drugs Strategy

Appointed Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach and Department of Defence in May 2008, following the election of An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen.

Appointed Minister at the newly created Department for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs in March 2010.
